Art Gazing : 5.7.25 (part 1) - Nathan Sawaya : The Art of The Brick

10/14/25

Location : Washington, D.C. (undisclosed)

Wednesday, May 7, 2025 - Today was another fun day out with the whole team.  We love LEGOS, so when we saw the advertisement for Art of the Brick, we immediately put it on the calendar!

Like most kids, I did love LEGOS, but with the rise of the video game during my adolescence, my affinity for them waned in the shadow of my desire for more of what was new and cutting edge. Over the years, watching the brand expand through collaboration (by the licensing of other popular brands), and the magnitude of possible creations increasing exponentially, I didn’t know what to expect.

In recent years, we’ve been making trips to the LEGO store at Rockefeller Plaza when were are in NYC, so I’ve had the opportunity to reenter the world with fresh eyes. They have a life-sized Taxi Cab that my daughter loves to take pictures in, so that and things that I’ve seen online, (like this young man whole built a detailed cruise ship, with multiple levels, fully furnished, with all the bells and whistles you can think of) were my only points of reference for what we were about to view.

Such a cool exhibit! We thoroughly enjoyed it. Felt like we were on a museum visit in Legoland!!!  Enjoy these selects!!

Summary of Exhibition (as seen on theartofthebrickexpo.com):

After touring over 100 cities in 24 countries and entering CNN's list of “Must-See” exhibitions, Art of the Brick is coming to Washington D.C. The exhibit immerses the visitor in a cheerful and colorful world. The artist, Nathan Sawaya, used more than a million bricks, creating over 130+ works of art that can make adults and children smile and reflect.

The collection includes many sculptures alongside re-imagined versions of some of the world’s most famous art masterpieces, such as Michelangelo’s David, Van Gogh’s Starry Night, and Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. Among the wonders, visitors will also find a 6-metre-long reproduction of a Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton, an amazing LEGO safari and two innovative, multimedia collections of LEGO photography produced alongside award-winning photographer Dean West.
