Studio Visit : 5.17.26 - Jacob Hicks

Sunday, May 17, 2026 (Brooklyn, NYC) - Getting to see inside an artist’s studio, is like seeing behind the veil in Oz, you get to see where the magic is made!

On this day, I (we, as it was a family visit) got to hang with Jacob Hicks, one of the most talented painters I know. He is also one of the people that believed in my talent early on, and my daughter calls him “Uncle Jacob”!

It’s always a welcomed opportunity when the time permits to connect. It had been a while since we last saw each other and I was excited to see some of his latest work that he recently exhibted.

Jacob is a internationally exhibited oil painter and art educator with the Queens Museum. His work is where the past and the future collide. Using techniques of the masters, he uses historical figures and motifs as muses to create breathtaking works that make you feel light years ahead.

His latest show at the time was entitled “Crépuscule (Dusk)”, a collaboration with sculptor, Sui Park (@park.sui), where her biomorphic sculptures, made by the weaving of industrial materials like monofilaments and cable ties, merge with his oil paintings collaging Western Art history, Jungian Psychology, and imagined patterning inspired by oceanic and equatorial marine life. Works depict lucid scenes and environments that these sculptures could possibly inhabit. The dusk, an intimate environment where the constant is transformation, forms are in transition, in the “in between”, when day turns night. I’m always in awe looking at his pieces and this time was no different.

Also got to see a couple of Jacob’s past works, that were at various stages of completion the last time I saw up close. His detailing is impeccable!
